Vijay's Fight Against Drug Peddlers

Vijay's Fight Against Drug Peddlers
For sure, actor Vijay has decided to get away from his usual shades of fighting against the baddies for the sake of people. As a matter of fact, his upcoming film ‘Kaavalan’ doesn’t even contain single percentage of those aspects as it is touted to be a poignant romantic comedy. But a particular scene has Vijay taking on the baddies indulged in drug peddling at college campus.

The sequence was recently shot at VIT College in Vellore. According to the story, Asin and her friends feel embarrassed as Vijay keeps following her as bodyguard throughout the campus. She purposely gets him involved with group of students consuming narcotic drugs.

The film’s shooting is 95% completed and is expected to have audio launch during last week of September.

Nagaram Marupakkam:Thalainagarams sequel

Nagaram Marupakkam
The transition from an acclaimed director to an accomplished hero with a good track record was quite fast and smooth for Sundar.C.

The director turned actor who met success as the lead man in ‘Thalainagaram’, ‘Veerappu’, ‘Sandai’ , Ayudham Seivom’ and ‘Aindham Padai is soon to turn to directing again.

As he has already shown that he is equally good in front of the camera, he will be seen as a hero in a new movie ‘Nagaram Marupakkam’ directed by himself and produced by Avni Cinemax (P) Ltd, a banner owned by wife Khushbhu Sundar.

‘Siva Masaula Sakthi’ fame Anuya is playing the female lead role in ‘Nagaram Marupakkam’ which is said to be a sequel to ‘Thalainagaram’ in which Sundar C made his debut into acting as a hero.

Sundar.C while speaking about directing himself for the first time as a hero says, “I chose to direct a movie again because I don’t want the director in me to take a back seat thanks to my desire to stand in front of the camera. The decision to make a sequel to Thalainagaram was because the film was a turning point in my career and the story had the potential for a second part”.

Vijay's hit and Vikram's Miss this Diwali

Vijay's hit and Vikram's Miss this Diwali
Looks like Vijay will make it to the box-office for Diwali celebrations this November. His Kaavalan, remake of the Malayalam flick Bodyguard, is in the final stages of completion and is a sure shot for Diwali release according to production sources. Kaavalan is a comedy directed by Malayalam director Siddique and stars Asin opposite Vijay.

On the other hand, Vikram – Boopathy Pandian’s venture Vedi that was supposed to have been released for Diwali is more or less shelved and will not see the light of the day for Diwali. Point, in fact, is that the title Vedi is referential to the Diwali festival.

Neeyum Naanum - Movie Review

Neeyum Naanum - Movie Review
Cast: Sanjeev, Sethna, Sampath, Manobala, Singamuthu
Direction: Solairaja
Music: K Sathya

Director Solairaja, who made many a popular serial on small screen, has tested waters in the tinsel town with a film that speaks about the egos, friendship and camaraderie among children.
Set in the backdrop of a dance competition between students, the movie harps about the innocence of children, their agony and frustration.

Though Solairaja has tried his hand at such an interesting theme, what the movie lacks is the way the director has executed it. It sounds clichéd and predictable at many places.

Sanjeev of ‘Kulir 100 Degree’ plays the lead role while debutant Chetna is cast as his ladylove. The film boasts of star cast that includes Sampath Kumar, Master Rinson, Master Sachin, Singamuthu, Nellai Siva and Manobala among others.

The movie begins in a school campus where Surya (Sanjeev) comes to join as aerobics instructor. The school is owned by Sampath (Sampath Kumar), the chairman of a group of educational institutions, and an influential man in town.

Surya develops affinity with Diya (Chetna), a relative of Sampath who is also a dance teacher there. Meanwhile, a poor boy Karthick (Rinson) manages to get admission in the school thanks to Surya.
An intelligent boy, he incurs the wrath of Siddharth (Sachin), son of chairman of the school who studies in the same class. Karthik's mother falls sick and he needs Rs. Five lakh to do surgery for her. Comes a dance contest carrying cash award of Rs 10 lakh which Karthik wants to do. Siddharth comes in between and poses hurdles.

Eventually with Surya's help Karthik gets admitted to another school. Surya, Karthi and others take it as challenge and prepare themselves for the competition. Meanwhile Diya walks out from the house to be with Surya. It’s finals between Siddharth and Karthik and the best wins.

The movie boasts of enough dance sequences. There are some fun elements in the form of children getting ready for dance contests. Sanjeev looks cool and suave while Chetna is okay. Sampathraj as usual does his job well. All the kids have played well.

Music by Sriram Vijay is good especially the theme music. Premshankar's cinematography is breezy. All said ‘Neeyum Nanum’ is like watching a dance contest on a television channel which impresses you in parts.

A.R. Rahman's Common Wealth Song Is Highly Downloaded

A.R.Rahman
Creating records is not a new thing for A R Rahman. He did it once again on Saturday when the theme song composed by him for the Common Wealth Games was released at a glittering ceremony in New Delhi.

If one has to go by reports, within two hours of the song’s release, it was downloaded more than 7,000 times. As Rahman croons ‘Khelo, jeeyo, hey-o, let's go…’, the rousing chorus takes the song forward, thereby giving an emotional appeal.

On Saturday, the Oscar-Grammy winner sung the song for around five minutes in front of a gathering which included Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit, her Haryana counterpart Bhupinder Singh Hooda and CWG Organising Committee Chairman Suresh Kalmadi.

“I feel honoured to get the opportunity to compose the theme song for the mega-event. It was not an easy task. I had started composing it six months ago and finished just last night,” the Mozart of Madras said.

A beaming Kalmadi hailed the launch of the theme song as a good beginning to the hosting of successful Games. “A well beginning is the half job done. Now onwards you will listen this song day in and day out,” he said.

Trisha, Charmi & Kamna under police scanner

Trisha, Charmi & Kamna under police scanner
When the Hyderabad police took the Nigerian national into custody, a casual perusal of the call history on his mobile revealed that he had been regularly spoken to by many leading actors and actress from the Tamil and Telugu film industry. The Telugu press was abuzz with the news that on top of the list of the Nigerian’s contacts was actress Trisha, whose cellphone number was on the Nigerian’s phone.

This could only mean that whoever was on the Nigerian’s call-list were taking the banned cocaine regularly from him. Besides Trisha, the Nigerian’s phone reportedly had numbers of actresses Charmee and Kamna Jethmalani. Both Charmee and Kaamna remained unavailable to the Telugu press.

Trisha’s statement that ‘she won’t spare anyone spreading false news about her’ and that ‘she would take legal recourse to fight this menace’ reportedly didn’t cut much ice in the media.

The Telugu media doesn’t appear to be in a mood to let the matter go out of hands. It has been reported by them that as many as 65 VIPs including the above-said actresses, actors and budding politicians are in the list of persons who had been in touch with the Nigerian.

Wait for a ticking time-bomb to explode in the coming days! (TK)

Sreenu Vytla appearence in Ballaya's PVC
Appearing on silver screen is not new to director Sreenu Vytla. He did before in V N Aditya directed Rain Bow. But acting under veteran director Dasari’s direction is different ballgame altogether. When Dasari asked him to do a small role of a film director in his 150th movie, Parama Veera Chakra, Srinu Vytla immediately said yes. For rarely does one get chance to act with this veteran director. He shot for the film for two days and finished his part. In the film, Balakrishna  plays dual role and one character he portrays is that of a film star. So Srinu Vytla acted directing Balakrishna, the star in the film.

Vilai :: Tamil Movie Review & News

Vilai Tamil Movie Review
Director Kamaraj has tried his hand at serving a strong message in ‘Vilai’, which is about innocent women being exploited and pushed to flesh trade. Thankfully the film maker doesn’t stretch for effort here showing the dark sides, but he has tried to narrate a sequence of events to convey the theme.

The movie has some familiar names like Saravanan, Udhayathara and ‘Nadodigal’ fame Barani. What begins as a docu-drama suddenly changes gears to become a routine clichéd affair. The intention of the director seems to be right, but he falters at its execution. Events unfold at quick pace and at places defy logic, taking away all sheen.

Nandhu (Barani) and his sister Vandhana (Reethu Soni) live at Melur village with their parents. They quarrel with each other. Unable to tolerate it, their father arranges for Vandhana’s wedding. Her brother however wants her to continue studies as she is a topper.

Vandhana comes with Nandhu to Chennai. She gets kidnapped by a call taxi driver and Nandhu begins his search only to come to know that she has been kidnapped by a gang running flesh trade. Now Nandhu takes the help of Assistant Commissioner of Police Shanmugavel (Saravanan), who had a bad past and had his young daughter kidnapped a few years ago.

He along with Nandhu goes on search and succeeds in finding her in the custody of a Mirchi Maya (Fathima), a dreaded woman don who runs prostitution houses in Andhra Pradesh. But there awaits a surprise for Shanmugavel. Also how Vandhana is saved is the rest.

Saravanan reminds one of Vijayakanth. He replicates the ‘Captain’ in his walk and mannerisms. Barani plays a desperate brother, while Reethu Soni as Vandhana is cute. The rest of the cast includes ‘Yogi’ Devaraj, Chandru and Amarasigamani among others.

The content was there to give a riveting film. But Kamaraj seems to have achieved only in parts. On the whole, the movie doesn’t work wonders. However the director deserves pat for taking a relevant issue and discussing it.

Cast: Bharani, Saravanan, Bhanuchandar, Gemini Balaji, Chanthru, Udhayathara, Reethu, Madhumitha, Fathima

‘3 Idiots’ Tamil Remake Confirmed

‘3 Idiots’ Tamil Remake Confirmed
At a time when a lot of buzzes are doing rounds about the Tamil remake of ‘3 Idiots’, director of the Bollywood blockbuster Raju Hirani has confirmed that the film is being remade in south Indian languages

Speaking at the DVD launch of the Aamir Khan starrer in Mumbai, the filmmaker said, “The movie will be soon made in Tamil and Telugu. But I don’t know who will play the lead there.”

“I think they (producers and director of the Tamil version) are currently in the process of casting,” Hirani said and added that he has no plans to make a sequel to ‘3 Idiots’. “I am not with that idea,” he said.

There were reports that a popular production house has acquired the remake rights of ‘3 Idiots’ and Shankar will direct both the Tamil and Telugu versions. “While Vijay will replace Aamir Khan in Tamil, Mahesh Babu will play the role in Telugu,” reports said.

Sandhya throwing ‘starry’ tantrums?

Sandhya throwing ‘starry’ tantrums?
Sandhya, who tasted success on the earlier stage of her career with ‘Kadhal’ and ‘Dishyum’, found it difficult to continue the winning streak. Her movies like ‘Vallvan’ and ‘Thoondil’, failed to evoke any interest among the audiences.

Now Sandhya has very little offers but that doesn’t deter her from being choosy about her roles. Recently director Yuvan of ‘Sindhanai Sei’ fame approached her to play the lead role in his next film titled ‘Kallattam’. Sandhya shocked him with a list of demands which included that she wanted the entire script in a book form and in a neat file and that no other character in the film should have as much significance as hers in the film. She also reportedly demanded a fee of Rs.15 lakhs.

Yuvan, who was shocked to hear all these things, has dropped the idea of casting Sandhya. Now it is Shammu, who has been signed up as heroine in ‘Kallattam’!

Vijayakumar was born on this day in 1949. Right from his early days his passion was acting. His first role in films was as a child actor in 1961. Vijaykumar was the little Lord Murugan in ‘Sri Valli’ starring Sivaji Ganesan and Padmini. But not many offers were forthcoming for the little actor.

Later to develop himself as a complete actor Vijayakumar started acting in stage plays. He joined the celebrated Sahasranamam’s Seva Stage to learn the fine tricks of acting. Muthuraman was also with the Seva Stage at that time. When Muthuraman became popular in films and left the troupe his roles were offered to Vijayakumar.

Then in 1973 Vijayakumar got his first bi break. After passing stringent tests he was selected to play one of the main roles in ‘Ponnuku Thanga Manasu’ directed by Devaraj-Mohan. The other hero in the film was Sivakumar. The success of ‘Ponnuku Thanga Manasu’ got him a permanent place in Tamil cinema.

Vijayakumar went on to become one of the highly successful stars. It is not an exaggeration if we say Vijayakumar ruled the seventies along with Jaishankar and Muthuraman. Films like Aval Oru Thodarkathai, Mathura Geetham, Azhage Unnai Arathikkiren boosted up his reputation. He even skifully managed to support the icons MGR and Sivaji. ‘Deepam’ with Sivaji and ‘Intrupol Entrum Vazhga’ are two of most memorable films by Vijayakumar.

In the beginning of eighties Vijayakumar wanted to retire from films after staying away from arc lights for some time. But how can one of the most versatile actors be allowed to go just like that? Maniratnam offered Vijayakumar one of his lifetime roles in ‘Agninatchathiram’ and the second innings of Vijayakumar gathered momentum and still going strong.
‘Andhi Mantharai’ directed by Bharathi Raja was one film which took him almost close to winning the national award for best actor. He missed it by one vote. He keeps getting strong characters like that he played in Kizhakku Vasal and Kizhakku Cheemayile even today.

In his 50 years long career there is no role Vijayakumar has not played to excellence. There is no legendary director who has not directed him. Be it a lover boy, adoring brother, devoted husband, menacing villain, funny bean, doting father, imposing village chieftain, upright police officer he has played all to perfection. From MGR, Sivaji to Rajini, Kamal to Rajini, Kamal to Karthik, Prabhu to Vijayakanth, Sarathkumar to the present young actors, Vijayakumar has royally marched along with all of them.

Still, the veteran in all humility says “I don’t think I have achieved anything in life. Acting is life and I know only that”. With a happy family consisting of wives Muthukannu and Manjula, daughters Kavitha, Anitha, Preetha, Sridevi and Vanitha and son Arun Vijay, Vijayakumar is a contented man. His achievements are unique and have a few pages of Tamil film history dedicated to him.

Tamilkey again congratulates him on his completion of 50 eventful years in Tamil cinema and wish him all the best on his birthday.

Aashayein :: Hindi Movie Review and News

Aashayein :: Hindi Movie Review and News
Aashayein (hopes), starring John Abraham, Anaitha Nair, Sonal Sehgal and Girish Karnad is Kukunoor’s latest after 8×10 Tasveer. Expectations? Yes, because this is the very man who gave us Hyderabad blues, Iqbal and Dor.Aashayein is about how hope transforms the heart and mind of a young gentleman. Rahul (John Abraham), a gambler, proposes to marry his girlfriend Nafisa (Sonal Sehgal) after winning a huge sum of money in gambling. When all is well, doctors diagnose that he has lung cancer. Does Rahul cope with the thought of death in his mind? How does ‘hope’ play a part in shaping his thoughts? This is what Aashayein is all about.

The first few shots show John curiously observing the TV screen puffing and blowing cigarettes away. We assume he is a gambler (compulsive as the previews claimed). Being his lucky day, he wins the jackpot and earns (!!!) a huge amount of money by betting on an Indian team’s loss. He throws a party to his close ones, proposes to his live-in girlfriend and faints. Doctors diagnose him of lung cancer which leaves him in a state of desperation. All the luxury life he always dreamt of seems to be hanging in the balance. In typical filmy style, he learns about Hope foundation and decides to leave his girlfriend. Not before he leaves her a huge sum of money.

John, with some clothes and lots of money lands at the hospice which is host to 50 people who are breathing their last. We see all kinds of characters here. Uncle Parthasarthi (Girish Karnad), who has throat cancer and lost his ability to speak. An ex-prostitute Madhu (Farida Jalal) who is infected with AIDS and treated as an untouchable by the inmates. A high-octane cancer patient Padma (Anaitha Nair) and the kid Govinda who, others presume, has got spiritual powers. Rahul bonds with all the characters and slowly learns what life is all about. He fulfills the dreams of the people around him realising that it is hope which makes us live, forgetting our worries.

There are very interesting scenes sprinkled throughout the movie. There are scenes which tugs your heart and melts you down. But Aashayein never gets preachy at any point. The reference to Indiana Jones in the second half which helps John find his path is quite good. John, fits perfectly as the young Indy. All these said, the movie does not make a compelling watch. Though it runs for only 120 mins, we certainly feel that it is a touch draggy.

Nagesh has always been caught between the realms of arty and commercial cinema. He may be a wonderful story teller but somehow fails to give it the touch it needs to make his movies a must watch. Aashayein has wonderful moments. Moments which make u feel, moments which make you realise a lot of things about life but it fails deliver the magic intended.

The casting is brilliant. John Abraham as Rahul has lived the character. Be it the man who dreams big, the man in self-denial, the cancer patient or the man bonding with the others in the hospice, he has done absolute justice for his character. So has Sonal Sehgal. Though she has not much to do in this movie, her subtle acting adds to the warmth that the director has intended. Girish Karnaud, as usual, makes his character as realistic as possible. Farida Jalal, has been given a small role but she surely evokes sympathy as the AIDS patient. Ashwin as Govinda is every bit a child prodigy we can expect. But the biggest piece of pie goes to Anaitha Nair. Impetuous, obnoxious and full of life, Padma makes you hate, laugh, cry and experience love with her. Good job.

Cinematography by Sudeep Chatterjee is quite good especially in the opening shot. The scenes in the hospice and the beaches have been captured well. Salim-Sulaiman’s music works most of the time. Songs are loud and spoil the mood of the movie at times.

Aashayein has its moments of glory but we only hope there is more. In any case, this is a better watch than most of brainless Bollywood movies.

Verdict : Aashayein – Despair. Not entirely!

Neeyum Naanum :: Tamil Movie Review and News

Neeyum Naanum :: Tamil Movie Review and News
When we are busy traveling between a village and city in the past two weeks with Vamsam and Naan Mahaan Alla, both of which already releasing to good responses, this one sneaks into the movie halls without much ado. With a hero who is one film old, a heroine making her debut and a relatively new director, Neeyum Naanum did not garner enough attention before its release. Will it have enough energy to steamroll into the following weeks is a question that needs an answer.

Sanjeev, who made an impressive debut in Kulir 100 degrees, is the hero of this movie and Sethna is making her debut as the heroine. Sampath, known for his villain and character roles in movies like Saroja and Goa, has acted in an important role in Neeyum Naanum. Set in a school backdrop, Neeyum Naanum is about what happens in the life of two students and a young teacher who wants to break all barriers.

Sampath is the correspondent of a convent school in which his son is studying. Sethna, Sampath’s orphaned niece, is the Head of the Department for dance in the same school. Sampath’s son is in love with Sethna who denies the love in typical filmy style. As is the case in most movies, Sampath’s son is the spoilt brat. This is when Sanjeev joins as the dance teacher in the convent. So what is the plot all about? Read on.

Sanjeev meets Karthik, a young boy from Nochikuppam. Karthik, who has lost his father, helps Sanjeev in his daily activities and his expertise in English impresses Sanjeev. Sanjeev tells Karthik to join school and encourages him to study well. When all is well, Karthik’s mother faints and doctors diagnose that she has lung cancer and they would need 5 lakhs for her treatment. This is when an inter-school competition is announced with a first prize of 10 lakh of which 6 lakhs would go to the lead dancer. Karthik asks Sanjeev for help who refuses by saying that he does not have it in him to dance. But Karthik is adamant because of the money involved.

Sanjeev finally gives in to Karthik’s repeated attempts. Not very impressed, Sanjeev somehow agrees to include Karthik in the dance group. But Sampath and his son are against it. This makes Sanjeev leave the convent with Karthik and join a Corporation school as a dance teacher. With Karthik as the main dancer, he hand picks 12 boys from the slums from varied backgrounds and trains them. The interschool dance competition is the climax of the movie and there are no prizes for guessing who wins the competition. To add to the drama, Karthik faints before the dance and Sanjeev brings him back to life.

I think you would have an opinion in your minds by now. Yes, the movie definitely reminds you of a lot of movies of the past. Especially the rock and roll movies of Anand Babu… fantasy, dance, love, tears et al. And again, we have yet another movie which is predictable and makes you yawn. More so because this one involves school going kids. The direction and screenplay have a lot of loopholes. The one thing which makes an exception in the movie is the choreography of a couple of dance sequences. Otherwise, the cinematography by Prem Shankar and music by Sriram Vijay are not worth a great mention.

Sanjeev, Sethna and the rest have done their bit which deserves no special mention. Sampath has been wasted in such a miniscule role. Master Rimson and Master Sachin have done a neat job. The movie could have been much better if the scenes don’t remind you of movies of the 70′s and 80′s. Neeyum Naanum has a very faint chance to score big.

Verdict – Neeyum Naanum – Fails to thrill you and me

Moscowin Kaveri :: Tamil Movie Review and News

Moscowin Kaveri :: Tamil Movie Review and News
Acclaimed cinematographer Ravi Varman debuts as a director in Moscowin Kaveri, a title that connects the Russian river Moskva with the South Indian River Kaveri. MK was in the making for quite some time and has finally hit the screens and its anachronistic feel can be perceived in many places. Although this film is the debut vehicle for the cute Samantha and the handsome Rahul Raveendran, the former is already known to movie buffs, thanks to VTV and Baana Kathadi.

The fast-paced lives of software professionals, their colorful lifestyles and impulsive behavior is the premise of MK. Moscow is the name of the hero and you guessed it right, the heroine is Kaveri. The title is justified out right. Kaveri is from village but is a city dweller with a plum software job in Chennai. Moscow is also a village boy but appears to be a rich orphan and is also a techie in the city.

Moscow sees Kaveri and it is instant love. He pursues her but is rejected. However, after a couple of melancholic moments and a seemingly remorseful act by the hero, Kaveri comes to his village and accepts his love. The reason is flimsier than a muslin cloth – her friend says that it is hard to find a good boy and it is sensible to accept someone who wants you rather than the other way round. Now, haven’t you heard this innumerable times in so many films?

Anyway, the couple gets together and Kaveri moves in with Moscow as she finds it difficult to live without him. They are live-in partners which do not go well with the neighborhood (some streak of reality here) and they buy a beautiful mansion in ECR in the blink of a well curled eyelash. The ride after this for the couple is bumpy and what happens to them after this is narrated by bringing in a villain Harshvardhan (YG Mahendran’s son) accompanied by a few lessons on life.

Director Ravi Varman scores well with his lens but flounders as a director with his inconsistent narration. Most of the scenes are illogical, ambiguous and appears disjointed. Was the film edited too much? The characterization of lead artistes lacks depth and is jumpy. It is hard to believe a girl with a rural background to go in for a live- in relationship and do a complete somersault in the climax with a mere sentence from her dad.

Rahul Raveendran looks every bit the suave software professional. Samantha is fresh and emotes well too. Harshvardhan, as the most feared criminal, does not have much work except walking around in debonair suits and a few weapons in a short duration. Why is Santhanam there? With his hideous wigs and loud dialogues, he tries to tickle us. His track is completely disjointed. He appears to be reasonably rich but is a van driver. Come on, Ravi Varman, please credit your audiences with some amount of intelligence!

Music director Thaman impresses with his work. The lyrics of some of the songs clearly indicate its old timeframe. Nee Ondrum Azhagi Illai number reminds of Aval Appadi Onrum from Angadi Theru. The lively gore gore number is missing in the film.

The visuals are appealing and are very aesthetic, thanks to cinematographer Ravi Varman. Although the theme is around live-in relationships, the director has delivered it clean sans any vulgarity. The major plus point in the film is its short duration (100 minutes) and thankfully the ordeal comes to an end soon.

Verdict – Parched River!

Takers : English Movie Reviews and News

Hollywood Movie Takers Review
The record of rappers becoming actors is decidedly mixed. Eminem drew praise for his semi-autobiographical turn in 8 Mile, while his Detroit neighbor, Curtis “50 Cent” Jackson, was largely panned for his work in his 2005 biopic Get Rich or Die Tryin’. Ice Cube and Ice T have both earned steady paychecks, and occasional acclaim, on the big and small screens, while the less-esteemed member of the Brothers Ice, Vanilla, never quite recovered from 1991‘s disastrous Cool as Ice.

Two of the latest hip-hoppers to attempt the leap, Chris Brown and Tip “T.I.” Harris, can both be seen in the heist thriller Takers. They also served as producers on the film, and in that regard they deserve credit for helping assemble a cast that quite effectively lowers the bar for their acting work. In an ensemble that includes the likes of Paul Walker and Hayden Christensen, they needn’t worry about issuing Oscar-worthy performances. As long as they’re semi-ambulatory, they stand a fairly good chance of keeping pace with Takers’ slow-moving herd.

The film’s plot concerns a swaggering crew of bank robbers whose sophisticated methods have enabled them to pull off a number of high-stakes heists with nary a hitch. Their strict adherence to a one-job-per-year schedule is enough to fund a luxurious lifestyle, in which they freely indulge their tastes for fancy cars, tailored suits, single-malt scotch, and big cigars (No King Cobra and Swisher Sweets for these classy gents. No siree.) All of which is fastidiously depicted by director John Luessenhop (Lockdown), whose aesthetic sensibility in Takers varies between hip-hop video and Maker’s Mark ad.

And they’re decent, civic-minded folks, too: Jake (Michael Ealy) is eager to leave the game and settle down with his fiance (Zoe Saldana), the proprietor of a trendy downtown L.A. cocktail lounge; his brother, Jesse (Brown), wants to ensure their elderly father is taken care of upon his release from prison; proper English chap Gordon (Idris Elba, the lone standout) faithfully shepherds his junkie sister through rehab; John’s (Walker) moral compass won’t allow for shooting cops or unarmed civilians; and A.J. (Christensen) is a talented pianist whose bowler hat and hoarse, hepcat diction are, I can only assume, indicative of a deep appreciation for jazz-age style.

But for all the gang’s obvious intelligence, their judgment of character is appallingly poor. When a shady former associate named Ghost (T.I. — which, after watching the film, I now realize stands for “Totally Incoherent”) comes to them with a suspiciously lucrative new opportunity he claims to have hatched during a recent jail stint, the fellas need all of a nanosecond to sign on to the dubious scheme, forsaking all of the rules that made them successful. Why they’d place their livelihoods on the line for an ex-con who can’t be bothered to raise his eyelids above half-mast or pronounce consonants appearing at the end of words like “love” (which his lazy twang renders “luh”) is beyond me, but it’s the first of several missteps that open the door for Detective Jack Welles (Matt Dillon), an old-school cop who refuses allow a crumbling marriage, chronic sleep deprivation, or established caselaw involving warrants and Miranda rights to deter him in his dogged pursuit of justice.

Takers features a smattering of the expected twists and turns, most of which are sufficiently telegraphed by Luessenhop’s direction, which downshifts to slow-motion at the advent of every action sequence, and the film’s predictable story arc. What is surprising about the film is its lack of verve, an absolute must for a heist flick and something which even the worst of the Ocean’s films boasted. For all of its bullets and bling, Takers all too often feels as lethargic as its co-producer and co-star, T.I., looks. (Although, to be fair, Dillon appears at times to be sleep-walking as well.)

The Last Exorcism Reviews & News

Hollywood Movie The Last Exorcism Reviews & News
The faux-documentary, “cinema verite” camera style is increasingly prevalent in horror flicks these days, and not just because the technique enables budget-conscious genre filmmakers to expend fewer resources on things like locations, lighting, and visual effects. When done convincingly, as in the surprise blockbuster Paranormal Activity, it adds an element of chilling authenticity that can dramatically enhance otherwise weak or derivative material. When done poorly, as in the hokey alien-abduction thriller The Fourth Kind, it comes off as little more than a cheap cinematic trick.

The faux-doc approach is, for the most part, put to effective use in Daniel Stamm’s The Last Exorcism, an unpretentious indie thriller that aims to blend the ethereal terror of William Friedkin’s 1973 horror classic The Exorcist with the this-is-really-happening novelty of The Blair Witch Project. Its cast, made up primarily of modestly talented, vaguely recognizable TV actors, is led by Patrick Fabian as the Reverend Cotton Marcus, a handsome, charismatic preacher bred from the cradle to spread the Word. But beneath his true believer facade lies a profound disillusionment with his faith, the roots of which he frankly confesses to the documentary crew he’s assembled to chronicle his last cynical days in the pulpit. When he receives a letter from a distressed father pleading for him to perform an exorcism on his seemingly schizophrenic child, Cotton embraces the opportunity to record the most bogus of religious rituals for posterity. (Cinephiles will note the story’s strong resemblance to that of Marjoe, the Oscar-winning 1972 documentary about a traveling evangelist.)

To the creepy backwoods of rural Louisiana Cotton and his documentarians go, encountering a handful of colorful yokels before arriving at the ramshackle house belonging to Louis Sweetzer, a stone-faced alcoholic whose faith adheres to the more superstitious, fire-and-brimstone variety of Christianity. Louis’ delightful brood includes Caleb (Caleb “Clammyface” Jones) a prickly, unstable skeptic, and Nell (Ashley Bell), a friendly, gracious 16-year-old. All kids are little demonic at that age, but bright-eyed Nell’s malevolent fits go beyond the typical hormone-fueled teen tantrums: Among her unusual hobbies are contorting her body into inhuman poses, drawing ominous pictures of grisly murders, and mutilating housepets and farm animals. Surely Satan and his minions must be involved.

It’s a clever ploy by the filmmakers to set The Last Exorcism in the deep south, a place that needs no supernatural help to scare the bejesus out of people. Each of the three members Sweetzer family are creepily off-center, as if their drinking water is spiked with equal amounts of Ambien and Dexedrine. Even the sweetly innocent face of the unpossessed Nell has an unsettling quality to it (it’s oddly reminiscent of Vampire Weekend’s controversial Contra album cover). All of which suggests that Cotton and his documentary crew are about to be taught a painful lesson in redneck theology.
Director Stamm’s principal aim is to unnerve rather than shock, and while The Last Exorcism features its fair share of scares, its tone is geared more toward keeping you on the edge of your seat than making you jump out of it. Disturbing details about the Sweetzer family are gradually revealed, giving rise to insinuations of incest and other acts far more sordid than mere demonic possession, the likelihood of which appears ever more possible as Cotton’s hocus-pocus treatments for Nell serve only to exacerbate her violent episodes. The film is betrayed at times by inaccuracies (Cotton employs a crucifix as one of his props, apparently unaware that they’re the sole domain of Roman Catholic clergy) and its chaotic, blink-and-you’ll-miss-it climax, which pack about a half-dozen twists into a 90-second flurry of darting camerawork and what appears to be community-theater reworking of Rosemary’s Baby, resolves matters in a devilishly disappointing fashion.
